LOINC Codes

Background

The Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC) database provides a set of universal names and ID codes for identifying laboratory and clinical test results. The purpose is to facilitate the exchange and pooling of results such as blood hemoglobin, serum potassium, or vital signs for clinical care, outcomes management, and research. LOINC codes are maintained by Regenstrief Institute.

Note: Viewing/Filtering content is free for all datasets below.

LOINC Codes Datasets
The following are the various datasets available on CDH for LOINC codes. Different views of the information have been made available for ease of use. Please note that some of the datasets may require a paid subscription (indicated by the symbol), due to the value-add provided (consolidating various sources, additional attributes, and incremental updates). All reasonable commercial attempt is made to keep the information up-to-date.
HC01 LOINC Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC) as of December 2007. Next update in December 2008.

Snapshot Period: Publish period of LOINC snapshot. X
LOINC Number: The unique LOINC Code is a string in the format of nnnnn-n. X
Class Type: Type of code divided into 4 major categories - 1) Lab Codes; 2) Clinical; 3) Claims attachments; 4) Surveys. X
Component: Component/Analyte. X
Time Aspect: Third part of a fully specified name indicates point or moment in time vs. time interval. X
Property: The second part of the fully specified name distinguishes between different kinds of quantities relating to the same substance, e.g. the mass concentration versus the substance (molar) concentration in sodium in urine sample. X
System: System (sample) type is the fourth part of the fully specified test name. It consists of two subparts; the first part names the system, the optional second part, delimited with a "^", indicates the super system source of the sample if it is not the patient, e.g. fetus, blood product unit, donor, etc. X
Scale Type: The fifth data part of the test name specifies the scale of the measure, and is a required part. X
Method Type: The method by which the test was performed is the sixth part of the test name. Methods need only be expressed as part of the name when they provide a distinction between tests that measure the same component (analyte) but which have different clinical significance or have a different clinical reference ranges. X
Class: An arbitrary classification of the terms for grouping related observations together. X
Related Names: Contains synonyms for each of the parts of the fully specified LOINC name (component, property, time, system, scale, method). X
Short Name: Concatenation of a fully specified LOINC name. X
Comments: Free text comments relating to the test result. X
Map to: Mapped to LOINC code for deleted codes. X
Reference: References to medical literature, product announcements, or other written sources of information on the test or measurement described by the LOINC record. X
Exact Component: Exact core component synonym. X
Molecular Weight: Molecular weight of chemical moieties. X
Formula: Regression equation details for many OB.US calculated terms. X
Chemical Name Synonym: Chemical name synonyms, alternative name synonyms and chemical formulae supplied by CAS. X
Chemical Base Name: Chemical base name from CAS. X
NAACCR ID: Map to North American Association of Central Cancer Registries Identification Number. X
Cancer Registry Code Table: Examples of CR0050 Cancer Registry. X
Claims: Is root?: Currently used for claims attachment only. Yes signifies the record is the root of a set of LOINC codes. X
Survey Question Text: Verbatim question for the survey instrument. X
Survey Question Source: Exact name of the survey instrument and the item/question number. X
Units required?: Y/N field indicates that units are required when this LOINC is included as an OBX segment in a HIPAA attachment. X
Order or Observation: Defines term as order only, observation only, or both. X
CDISC Common Tests: Y indicates that the term is a part of subset of terms used by CDISC in clinical trials. X
HL7 Field/Sub-field ID: Content should be delivered in the named field/sub-field of the HL7 message. X
Example Answers: Examples of valid answers, such as '1:64'. X
Data Last Changed: Date Last Changed. X
Change Type: Type of change? Deletes, Inserts, major change to name, etc. X
Expiration Date: Derived based on status and change date (deleted codes only). X
Property (Code): The second part of the fully specified name distinguishes between different kinds of quantities relating to the same substance, e.g. the mass concentration versus the substance (molar) concentration in sodium in urine sample. X
Scale Type (Code): The fifth data part of the test name specifies the scale of the measure, and is a required part. X
Time Aspect Description: Third part of a fully specified name indicates point or moment in time vs. time interval). X
